When planning a bathroom remodel, one of the biggest decisions Sioux Falls homeowners face is choosing between a walk-in shower or a bathtub. Both options bring their own benefits, and the “right” choice often depends on lifestyle, space, and long-term goals for the home.
At Hjellming Construction, we’ve been helping homeowners navigate bathroom renovations since 1962. With decades of experience in custom built bathrooms across Sioux Falls and the surrounding area, we’ve seen trends evolve—and we know what works best for local families.
Let’s take a closer look at what Sioux Falls homeowners are choosing today.

In recent years, the walk-in shower has become the clear favorite for many homeowners planning a modern bathroom remodel. These sleek, open designs are especially popular in master suites and luxury homes.
Why Sioux Falls Homeowners Love Walk-In Showers
- Clean, modern style that instantly elevates a bathroom makeover
- Easy access, making them ideal for aging in place
- Custom shower designs, including tile patterns, niches, benches, and glass enclosures
- A spa-like feel perfect for a luxury bathroom remodel
Many homeowners upgrading their space opt for a shower remodel that replaces an outdated tub/shower combo with a fully tiled, frameless walk-in shower. It’s a change that improves both daily comfort and resale appeal.
The Timeless Appeal of Bathtubs

While walk-in showers are trending, the bathtub still holds strong—especially for families and traditional homes. A bathtub remodel can add warmth, function, and flexibility to a bathroom design.
When a Tub Makes Sense
- Homes with young children
- Guest or hall bathrooms
- Homeowners who enjoy soaking and relaxation
- Preserving value for future buyers
From classic alcove tubs to elegant custom bathtubs, tubs remain a smart choice in the right setting. Many Sioux Falls homeowners choose to include at least one tub somewhere in the home, even if the primary bathroom features a walk-in shower.

One of the most common solutions we see during a Sioux Falls bathroom remodel is incorporating both. Larger bathrooms often allow for a separate custom shower and freestanding or built-in tub—creating a truly luxurious space.
This approach works especially well in:
- Master bathroom renovations
- New home construction
- High-end bathroom renovations
With thoughtful layout and design, you don’t have to compromise.
